When some of BC’s finest pop, jazz and folk performers take the stage in Whistler on August 11th in a benefit concert for UNICEF relief programs in Indonesia, it’ll be personal for organizer Jay Wahono. Wahono, a Whistler resident and businessman, hails from Java Island, where residents are reeling in the aftermath of 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the island in late May, followed five weeks later by a second 7.2-magnitude earthquake. The latter triggered a tsunami that smashed into a 110-mile stretch of the island’s coastline. Nearly 5000 people were killed and 130,000 left homeless, 40% of which are children. “The tragic fact is that people around the world see this as a "normal" condition in Indonesia,” said Wahono. “With this concert, I want to remind people here that they can make a real difference to a community on the other side of the world. It doesn’t take much to lend a helping hand.”
The concert is based on a compilation CD of the same name Helping Hands: West Coast Artists for UNICEF produced by Monique and Michael Creber (www.crebermusic.com) as a fundraiser in the aftermath of the 2004 South Asian tsunami. Each of the performers on the bill will perform an original song of their own, and the whole group will perform the title track, a show-stopping gospel-tinged anthem written especially for the compilation by Juno Award-winning keyboardist/composer Michael Creber. It promises to be an amazing musical evening with a powerful message of hope and healing.
